Hopkin marries Margaret Hugh on 2nd February 1838. Although listed as both of full age (over 18), Hopkin is in fact some 8 years younger than his new wife.
Further examination of the records, such as the 1851 census and the record of baptism for Margaret on 4th September 1807 show that quite an age gap existed between them.
There is now no further speculation needed for the reasons for marriage. The birth of their daughter Margaret barely 4 months later on 31st May 1838 at Tanybank, Crosshands, explains all.
